A straight answer for parents.
Portal is a camera-only social app made in Texas. Everything on it is filmed live inside the app — there is no upload button, so nothing fake, old or AI-generated can get in. Teens use it to share real moments from their day and compete with friends and rival schools on leaderboards.
Here’s exactly how it works and how we’ve designed it with students in mind. Questions at any point: support@portalapp.org — a human reads every email.
What your teen actually does on Portal
- Films short real-life videos and photos
- Posts disappear after 48 hours
- Earns streaks and trophies
- Competes for their school in school-vs-school challenges
There are no DMs with strangers pushing content and no endless algorithmic feed — the feed is simply what’s happening nearby, newest first.

How we protect students (by design)
- Students verify their school in the app. Student-only posts are visible only to other verified students — adults aren’t in that feed, by design.
- Adults cannot DM students on Portal.
- A student’s school is never shown publicly — posts show only the city.
- Location on a post is the city it was filmed in — never an address, never live tracking.
- Posts delete after 48 hours. Portal is rated for ages 13 and up.
- Everything is filmed live in-app, which means no resharing of old photos of your kid and no AI-generated imagery — of anyone.

Questions parents ask
Why is a Portal school account following my child on Instagram?
Our school accounts (like @portalapp.boernehigh) follow public accounts of local high school students to invite them to their school’s leaderboard. They never send messages, never comment on or like students’ posts, and never share students’ names. If you’d like the account to unfollow your child, email support@portalapp.org with the handle and we’ll do it the same day.
What we don’t allow
Bullying or harassment, sexual content, targeting a student, impersonation. Every post can be reported in two taps, and because we’re small and local, reports get handled by a person, fast. See our community guidelines.
Honest limits
No verification system is perfect, and no app replaces a conversation with your kid. We describe how Portal is designed — we won’t promise you “100% safe,” because no honest app can. What we will promise: when something’s wrong, you can reach us and we act. support@portalapp.org.
About prizes
Some school challenges have small prizes (gift cards). The rules, eligibility, and how winners under 18 receive prizes are all public: challenge rules & prizes.
A note from us
Portal is built by a Texas parent who got tired of feeds full of fake. If you’d rather hear it directly, email us — we answer.
