Portal is a camera-only, location-based app for sharing real photos and videos that disappear after 48 hours. This policy says what we collect, why, who sees it, and what you control. Short version: we collect what the app needs to work, we don't sell it, and we use a few signals to keep younger users safe.
What we collect
Location: your precise location when you open the camera and post. Portal is location-based; posts belong to the city you're in. We store the city and the capture location on each post. We do not keep a running history of where you go.
Content: photos, videos, captions, comments, direct messages, and things you report to us (bug reports, feature requests, support messages).
School: the school you add, if you add one (college, high school or middle school).
Usage and device: which screens and features you use, likes, views, follows, challenges, a device identifier, app version, crash and performance data.
How we use it
- To run the app: show posts by city, school and college, rank leaderboards, deliver messages and notifications, run challenges.
- To keep it real: location and capture data help us confirm posts were taken where they say they were.
- To keep younger users safe (see below).
- To fix and improve the app: crash reports, performance data, and aggregate usage.
- To answer you when you contact support.
Younger users
You must be 13 or older to use Portal. We use your birthday, the school you add, and where you post from to apply age-appropriate protections. For users under 18, messages from adults they don't follow arrive as requests they choose to accept, comments from unconnected adults on their posts are not shown publicly, and a high or middle school name is visible only to other students and verified college users. Adults are never shown as students. We never store location history to do this; we store only the result. Parents and guardians can reach us at support@portalapp.org.
Who sees what
- Other users: your username, profile, posts, comments, likes, leaderboard positions, city, and (for college students) your college. Your phone number, email and birthday are never shown.
- Service providers that run Portal for us: Supabase (database and storage), Bunny.net (video delivery), OneSignal (push notifications), Sentry (crash reports), Mixpanel (usage analytics), Apple (App Store, sign-in, payments). They process data on our instructions.
- Payments: if Portal offers coins or creator payouts, purchases go through Apple and payouts through Stripe. We never see or store card or bank numbers.
- Law: we share data when the law requires it or to protect users from harm.
We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
How long we keep it
Posts are removed from feeds after 48 hours and deleted from our servers shortly after, except copies you saved or that were reported. Messages stay until you delete them. Account data stays while your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your data within 30 days, except what we must keep for legal or safety reasons.
Your choices
- Change or delete your account in Profile → Settings, or email us.
- Turn location, camera, microphone and notifications on or off in iOS Settings. Portal needs location to post.
- Block and report users from any profile, post or comment.
- Ask us for a copy of your data at support@portalapp.org.
Security
Data travels encrypted (HTTPS) and is stored with access controls so users can only read what they're allowed to. No system is perfect; if something goes wrong we'll tell affected users.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll say so in the app. The date at the top is the version that applies.
