Best BeReal Alternatives in 2026 (For People Who Want Real, Not AI)
BeReal proved something important: people are tired of fake, filtered, perfect feeds. But a lot of friend groups have drifted off it. If you want that "this is actually real" feeling back, here are the best BeReal alternatives in 2026.
What made BeReal work
- You couldn't plan or edit the photo.
- Front and back cameras showed the whole moment.
- It felt real because faking it was hard.
The best alternatives keep that "hard to fake" part, and add a reason to keep coming back.
1. Portal: real, local and competitive
Best for: people who want real content from their city or campus, and creators who want to get noticed.
Portal is a camera-only social video and photo app. Everything is captured live in the app, so there's no AI and no camera-roll uploads. What makes it different:
- Location-based feeds. See what's happening in your city right now.
- Leaderboards. Rank up in your city, college, state and the whole country.
- College-only feeds. Verified students get a private campus layer non-students can't see.
- 48-hour posts. In-the-moment content that saves to your profile as memories.
- Streaks and trophies. Post daily, unlock badges, flex them next to your name.
2. Locket Widget: best for close friends
Photos go straight to a small group's home screens. It's great for your inner circle, but it isn't built for discovering what's happening around you.
3. Poparazzi: no selfies allowed
You can only post photos of your friends, not yourself. It's a fun idea, but it depends on your friends being active.
4. Yik Yak and Fizz: local, but anonymous text
Popular on campuses for anonymous posts nearby. They're local like Portal, but mostly text, and anonymity makes it hard to know who's real.
Quick comparison
- Want real + local + video: Portal
- Want a tiny private friend circle: Locket
- Want anonymous campus gossip: Yik Yak or Fizz
Why "no AI" matters now
When BeReal launched, the enemy was filters. Now it's AI: deepfakes, bot accounts and endless AI slop. An app where content can only be captured live is the simplest way to know what you're seeing actually happened. Here's why spotting AI by eye is getting harder.
