Spirit Week Ideas 2026: 30+ Dress Up Days Your School Will Actually Do

Pajama Day is fine. But spirit week can be so much better. Here are 30+ dress up day ideas grouped by theme, a couple of ready-made weekly lineups, and a way to turn the whole week into points for your school.

Student council already picked "Pajama Day" again, didn't they. Here are better options, grouped by theme so you can build a full week that actually flows.

How to build a spirit week that works

• Start easy, end loud. Monday should take zero effort. Friday is all-out school colors.
• Mix cheap and creative. Not everyone can buy a costume. Every day should be doable with stuff already in a closet.
• Check the dress code first. Nothing kills a theme faster than half the school getting sent to the office.
• Pick at least one group theme. Days where friends coordinate get the best photos and the most hype.

Classic dress up days (that still hit)

1. Pajama Day. Fine, it stays. Put it on Monday.
2. Twin Day. Match a friend. Upgrade: Triplet or Squad Day.
3. Jersey Day. Any team, any sport, any decade.
4. Decades Day. 70s, 80s, 90s or Y2K. Assign a decade per grade for extra chaos.
5. Color Wars. Each grade gets a color. Seniors usually call black or white.
6. School Colors Day. The big finale, usually game day.

Funny spirit week ideas

1. Anything But a Backpack Day. Laundry basket, cooler, microwave (unplugged, please).
2. Dress Like a Teacher Day. Lanyard, coffee mug, "see me after class." Keep it friendly.
3. Adam Sandler Day. Oversized basketball shorts and a hoodie. Most comfortable day of the year.
4. Tourist Day. Fanny pack, bucket hat, a map you hold upside down.
5. Mismatch Day. Patterns that should never meet, meeting.
6. Grandparent Day. Cardigans, reading glasses, a hard candy in your pocket.
7. Character Day. Dress as a book, movie or cartoon character.

Group and grade-level themes

1. Generation Day. Freshmen dress as toddlers, sophomores as kids, juniors as adults, seniors as senior citizens.
2. Country vs Country Club. Boots and flannel or polos and visors. Pick a side.
3. Beach vs Snow. Same idea, two climates.
4. Squad Costume Day. Your friend group as a band, a sports team or a famous movie cast.
5. Career Day. Dress as what you want to be in ten years.
6. Movie Day by grade. Each class picks a franchise and everyone in the grade dresses from it.

Homecoming week ideas 2026 (Texas edition)

In Texas, homecoming week has its own extra layer.

1. Mum and Garter Day. If your school does mums, show them off. Film the whole build, it's a process.
2. Western Day. Hats, boots, pearl snaps. Works for literally everyone.
3. Neon Out. Bright colors for a night game. Glows great under stadium lights.
4. Blackout or Whiteout. One color, entire student section.
5. Throwback Jersey Day. Find the oldest school shirt you can, or borrow one from a family member who graduated there.
6. Superhero Day. Capes optional, confidence required.
7. Rival Roast Day. Dress as an exaggerated version of your rival school's fans. Keep it about the mascot, not real people.

Low-budget ideas anyone can pull off

1. Hat Day. If your school allows it, this is the cheapest win there is.
2. Sock Day. Wildest socks, ranked at lunch.
3. Inside Out Day. Shirts on inside out. Free.
4. Sports vs Mathletes. Athletic gear or calculators and pocket protectors.
5. Flannel Friday. Fall vibes, zero effort.

Turn spirit week into points for your school on Portal

Spirit week is basically five days of content. On Portal, a camera-only social app, you can make it count for your school.

• Post one real clip every day. Portal is filmed live in the app, so no uploading old pics. That's what keeps it fair.
• Build a streak. Five spirit days in a row is a five-day streak, and streaks help you climb your school leaderboard. Here's how leaderboards work.
• Start a 1v1 challenge. Best Twin Day post, most views in 24 hours. Loser wears the winner's pick on Friday.
• Get your grade involved. Color Wars on Portal is just Color Wars with a scoreboard.

If you're at Boerne High or Champion, it gets better. The Boerne vs Champion Clash runs October 19 to 31, 2026. Every real post by a verified student counts for their school, scored per student, and streaks multiply. Run by Portal Tech, Inc., not affiliated with either school or Boerne ISD.

Quick etiquette

• Ask before you film someone's costume up close.
• Don't put your school's name or location in public posts. Portal only shows the city.
• Theme days about teachers or rivals should be funny, not mean.

Why Portal fits spirit week

Spirit week is the most "you had to be there" week of the year. Portal keeps it that way: real clips, filmed in the moment, gone from the feed after 48 hours but saved to your memories. Verified students can post to a student-only feed that only other verified students can see.

So pick a theme, film it, and put some points on the board for your school.
