How to Climb Your School Leaderboard (and Win More 1v1s)

By PortalPublished Oct 3, 20266 min read

Want to be at the top of your school's leaderboard on Portal? Here's what actually moves you up: streaks, timing, 1v1s and filming real moments, plus how to do it without oversharing.

Your school's leaderboard on Portal ranks people by likes, followers, views and comments. Here's how to actually move up it, without being cringe and without oversharing.

How the leaderboard works

Quick refresher. A leaderboard ranks users by a score. On Portal you can see where you stand among:

  • Your friends
  • Your school
  • Your city
  • Your state
  • Everyone, nationally

The ranking comes from likes, followers, views and comments. Your school leaderboard lives inside the students-only layer, so it's other verified students you're up against.

1. Protect your streak like it's your phone battery

A streak counts how many days in a row you've posted. It's the easiest edge you can get, because most people break theirs.

  • Post something every day, even if it's small. A 10-second clip counts.
  • Pick a daily trigger. Post on the drive home, at practice or at dinner, same time each day.
  • Don't save your best stuff for later. Posts leave the feed after 48 hours anyway, so post it now.

During a School Clash, streaks multiply what your posts are worth for your school. Missing a day hurts more than you think.

2. Post when people are actually on their phones

Since posts last 48 hours, timing isn't everything, but it helps to post when your friends are scrolling.

  • Right after school. Everyone's checking their phone.
  • Weekend nights. Games, hangouts, events.
  • Big moments, live. Pep rallies, homecoming, the first cold day. Film it while it's happening.

3. Use 1v1s to level up

1v1 challenges are head-to-head: most likes or views in 24 hours, 3 days or a week. Win and you get trophies.

  • Start with 24-hour challenges. Short, fun, low stakes.
  • Challenge friends, not just rivals. Both of you post more, both of you grow.
  • Go longer when you're ready. A week-long challenge rewards consistency, which is exactly where streaks help.
  • Win or lose gracefully. Nobody wants to follow a sore loser.

4. What to film (ideas that actually work)

Portal is camera-only. You film everything live in the app, no uploads, no filters. That means the winners are the people who notice good moments, not the people with the best editing.

Everyday stuff

  • The drive-thru order that went wrong
  • Your friend's hot take on a cafeteria item
  • Getting ready for a game, a meet or a show
  • Your dog having opinions
  • A sunset on the way home (yes, they still work)

Bigger moments

  • Friday night lights, from the student section
  • Spirit week outfits (see spirit week ideas)
  • Behind the scenes at band, theater or robotics
  • Low-stakes challenges with friends: hardest trick shot, fastest Rubik's cube, worst singing

5. Be real, it's literally the point

You can't fake much on Portal. There's no camera roll, no filters, no AI content. So lean into it.

  • Funny beats polished. The blooper is often better than the take you planned.
  • Talk to the camera. People like seeing who's behind the post.
  • Comment on other people's posts. Comments count toward rankings, and people tend to return the favor.
  • Don't chase drama. Roasting people might get views once. It also burns bridges with people you see every day.

6. Grow your followers the normal way

  • Get your actual friends on the app first.
  • Post consistently so people have a reason to follow.
  • Show up in your city feed by posting around town.
  • Be the person who hypes others up. It comes back around.

7. Stay safe while you climb

Ranking high means more people see your stuff. That's the fun part. It's also why you should be careful about what's in the frame.

  • Don't say your school's name in your videos or bio. Portal never shows your school publicly on posts, so don't undo that yourself.
  • Don't film your house number, street sign or license plate. Posts show your city only, never an address. Keep it that way.
  • Don't share your schedule ("I'm always at this spot at 4").
  • Don't post other people who didn't agree to it, especially in embarrassing moments.
  • If something feels off, say something. Tell a parent or someone you trust, and you can reach Portal at support@portalapp.org.
